Nobody owns the word Meisner
This is not a technicality. It explains almost everything confusing about shopping for a Meisner class.
In June 2016 an application was filed to register MEISNER as a trademark for teaching acting. The applicant was James Emmitt Carville, Meisner's life partner and the executor of his estate.
The trademark office pushed back twice. The application was abandoned in December 2017 for failure to respond, and no registration ever issued.
So the estate itself does not hold the name, and the office has gone further than that.
One caution on our own sourcing. The trademark office's search tool is blocked from where we work, so these records were read from a public mirror of the register rather than from the register itself. The filing numbers are in our notes and anyone can check them.

There is no governing body. None.
People assume something must sit behind the technique, keeping teachers honest, and nothing does.
There is no accreditation for Meisner training, no register of approved teachers, no licence, and nobody to complain to. Certification schemes exist, and they are private and commercial. One is headed "Official Program" and names no external body that recognises it, because there is none to name.
The clearest proof is a disagreement between two schools that both claim the lineage.
Meisner personally chose a small number of his students and trained them to teach. Everyone in this world agrees that happened, and nobody agrees how many there were.
One school, co-founded by Meisner himself, says its head teacher was one of fifteen. Another, founded by the executor of his estate, says Meisner handpicked some twenty.
Neither publishes the list, and we went looking for a roster without finding one anywhere. Two institutions that trade on the same lineage cannot agree how many people are in it.
That is not a scandal: it is what happens when a body of work outlives its founder without an institution to hold it. But it does mean the word certified is doing no work, because a certificate in Meisner teaching is issued by whoever sold it.
What to check instead
Every test below is the inverse of something a serious school publishes about itself, and none of it is our opinion.
Does the school name the teacher in its lineage?
Strong"In 1962 he began teacher training with Sanford Meisner." A person, a year, a relationship you could check.
Weak"Apprenticed under one of these twenty teachers." Or "studied with the Head Acting Teacher at the Playhouse." The link is real and the name is missing.
WhyA genuine line names the person, and an unnamed link is the single most common soft spot in this field.
Is the second year by invitation?
StrongThree of the oldest schools publish that year two is by invitation only, decided on artistic progress.
WeakA programme that sells you both years up front.
WhyThe invitation is the quality gate, and a school without one has no way to say no.
Will they skip you ahead?
Strong"All new students must start in a Beginning class regardless of prior training." Another school says even experienced actors begin at year one.
WeakAdvanced placement offered for prior experience.
WhyThe sequence is cumulative, and you cannot enter it in the middle.
Is there an interview?
StrongAn artistic review, a prepared monologue, a conversation with a teacher before you are admitted.
WeakOpen enrolment with a credit card.
WhyThis is the clearest single tell on the page: serious schools decide who they take.
Do they publish the price?
StrongA full fee table on the website, by year.
WeakNo number anywhere, and a phone call required.
WhyNot disqualifying on its own, and several respected studios publish nothing. But get the figure in writing before a two-year commitment.
Is a short course being sold as the whole technique?
StrongA summer intensive described as an introduction to the basic concepts.
WeakA ten-week diploma in the Meisner technique.
WhyShort courses are useful and honest, and the flag is a short course claiming completeness.
And one word to distrust on sight. Authentic, pure, legitimate, the only real Meisner. The trademark office has already ruled that those words mean nothing here, and a school leaning on them is telling you what it does not have.
What a real programme looks like
Five independent schools publish their own structure, and the agreement between them is useful.
Meisner taught at one school in New York for fifty-five years. He joined its faculty in 1935, ran the acting department until 1990, and stayed as director emeritus until his death in 1997. The two-year shape comes from there.
The sequence itself is not a secret: it is the chapter structure of the book. Repetition first, then the pinch and the ouch, then the knock on the door, then preparation, then text. The independent activity lives inside the knock on the door, so it is not a separate stage, and most summaries get that wrong.
Sydney Pollack, who trained there, wrote it down. "Sandy used to say, it takes twenty years to become an actor."
Pollack's gloss is the useful part: that is the time it takes for the principles to stop being technique and turn into instinct. Nobody sells you twenty years, and it is worth knowing what the two-year programme is the start of.
What it costs
Two honest routes exist, at very different prices, and both are real.
The shape to hold in your head: the full-time New York route is around forty thousand dollars over two years before you have eaten. The ongoing Los Angeles route is two to three hundred a month, indefinitely. Anything selling you the complete technique for a few hundred dollars is selling an introduction, which is fine as long as it says so.
Can you learn it online?
Plenty of schools sell it, and the sharpest argument against comes from the school Meisner co-founded, which tried it and stopped.
They ran a five-week online course from September 2020 to June 2021. Then they ended it and published their reasoning, which is unusually blunt for a school's own website.
They began, they say, only because everyone else had. "We were forced to offer an online class simply to stay competitive."
Then: "the actual teaching of acting is hampered by being online. Period." And: "No legitimate acting teacher will say online classes are equal or even better to being in person."
And the sentence aimed squarely at the rest of the field. "The fact that many Meisner schools are offering to teach the full two year Meisner Technique online is disingenuous. It simply cannot be taught fully online."
Their practical objection is the honest one: students held back because of roommates and neighbours. "You'll almost never be working with a scene or acting partner through a screen."
Meisner classes and studios, by state
What follows is a list with a standard attached, and the standard matters more than the list.
We are not ranking these schools, and every "top ten Meisner schools" article we found was affiliate-driven, and we could not find one worth citing. What we have done instead is check each entry against one question and publish the answer.
Direct. A named teacher at this school was trained by Meisner himself, and the school names them — very few schools qualify.
Lineage. The line runs through a named first-generation teacher — someone Meisner trained, and the intermediate person is named. If a school says "one of Meisner's teachers" without saying which, it is not this label.
Meisner-based. The school teaches this work and publishes no traceable line, which is not an accusation and it is where most good studios sit. Plenty of excellent teaching carries no lineage claim at all.
Each entry also carries the date we last checked it, and where a school publishes its tuition, we say so. Where it does not, we say that too.
We have not verified any school's state licensing, and New York licenses non-degree private schools, and that is the one real consumer protection that applies here. We could not confirm it for any studio and we are not going to imply we did.
And a listing here is not a recommendation. We checked what each school publishes about itself, and we have not sat in the room.
Grading the sources
A page whose argument is that other pages are unreliable owes you its own working.
On what we would not use. Scraped business directories, admissions lead-generators dressed as editorial, and press releases republished as news all carry Meisner school information and none of it is independent. One studio's marketing copy reached us through a wire service with a byline attached, which is advertising wearing a reporter's coat.
Where we differ from the standard account
Is there such a thing as a certified Meisner teacher?
Commonly saidYes, look for certification.
What we foundNo governing body exists, and certification means certified by whoever sold the certificate.
Which school teaches the real Meisner?
Commonly saidSeveral claim to, in exactly those words.
What we foundThe trademark office made a studio disclaim the word authentic, and the adjective is free and it carries nothing.
How many teachers did Meisner personally train?
Commonly saidA specific number, confidently.
What we foundOne school says fifteen, another says twenty, and neither publishes a list.
How long does the training take?
Commonly saidIt depends on the school.
What we foundFive schools independently publish two years, with the second year gated by invitation.
Can I skip ahead if I have trained before?
Commonly saidOften offered.
What we foundTwo schools refuse it in writing, because the sequence is cumulative and you cannot enter it in the middle.
Can Meisner be taught online?
Commonly saidYes, and many schools sell it.
What we foundThe school he co-founded tried it, stopped, and called the full two-year online offer disingenuous.
Is the Neighborhood Playhouse still going?
Commonly saidPeople ask because they are not sure.
What we foundYes — open, in session, and its most recent filing shows $8.4 million in net assets.
Should I trust a top ten Meisner schools list?
Commonly saidThey are a reasonable starting point.
What we foundEvery one we examined was affiliate-driven, and we could not find a single one worth citing.
Do one thing before you pay anybody: open the school's own faculty page and look for a name. If the lineage runs through a person they are willing to name, you can check it in ten minutes. If it runs through somebody unnamed, you have learned the more useful thing.
