The structural fact that shapes everything else
San Diego is outside the studio zone
The "studio zone" is a defined radius around Los Angeles. Inside it, a production hires you as a local hire and owes you nothing for getting there. Outside it, they owe travel and lodging — which makes hiring you more expensive than hiring someone in LA.

That is the honest answer to "why don't I get seen for LA work?" Frequently it is not your tape. It is a line on a map that makes you cost more than an identical actor in Long Beach.
Which raises the question everyone here eventually faces
Many San Diego actors list themselves as local to Los Angeles on casting profiles, and absorb the drive. That is a real, common, and entirely legitimate choice — but be clear-eyed: you are choosing to pay for a four-hour round trip per audition and per shoot day, in exchange for access to a far larger market.
Price that honestly before you decide. A $150 background day two hours away is not a $150 day.
There is also a San Diego Background Zone — a separate, defined SAG-AFTRA concept covering background casting in this region. The two zones together explain most of what confuses actors about working here, and they are worth understanding as a pair.

What the union says, in its own words
Applies to background casting in this zone specifically — do not over-generalise it to other markets.

They are not franchised or sanctioned by the union. Being on the union's list is not an endorsement, and SAG-AFTRA makes no representations about quality of service.

They cannot charge SAG-AFTRA members any fee to register. Not a small one. None.

Non-members may be charged a small one-time set-up fee — the union states this as $20–25. If you are asked for materially more than that, something is wrong.

These agencies should never require you to take classes from them as a condition of being cast.That is the cleanest statement of the pay-to-play boundary in the entire industry, and it comes from the union rather than from us.
Print rule four and keep it. It applies to background casting in this zone, but the principle travels: a business that casts you should not be requiring you to buy training from it. Anywhere.
Read the union's own caveat with it. Directly above that list they state: These agencies are not franchised nor sanctioned by SAG-AFTRA, and SAG-AFTRA makes no representations regarding the quality of services provided by such agencies.
Being on the list means these offices cast background for producers who signed the SAG-AFTRA agreement. It is not an endorsement, and it is not a vetting.

Principal breakdowns go out through agents, managers and the casting platforms. Background is run from their own notices — their background page read "no registration scheduled at this time" when we checked in August 2026, so watch it rather than expecting an open door.
Samuel Warren & Associates
International casting services — talent and "real people" for all media platforms. They also run on-camera and acting workshops, which is permitted. Hold that fact alongside rule four above: classes may be offered, but never required as a condition of being cast.

Note the theatre line. An Equity SPT tier 8 weekly minimum here is the highest regional theatre rate we have measured in any market in this build — a reflection of San Diego's unusually strong professional stage scene. A week of it is worth roughly seven days of vertical-series background.
So where should you actually be looking?
Commercial, branded and corporate work, and theatre. Those are where San Diego pays properly. Screen background here is thin and modestly paid, and the vertical-series boom has brought a lot of very low and unpaid offers with it.
Three local markets nobody writes about
What San Diego has that Los Angeles does not
Bilingual and border-adjacent work
Live local postings seek bilingual actors explicitly — one short film sought a Spanish/English bilingual lead, noting other languages would also work for the story. San Diego sits on the border and its production reflects that. If you are bilingual, say so prominently on every profile.
Military-adjacent production
One of the largest military populations in the country sits here, and it generates training, documentary, recruitment and feature work that does not exist in most markets. Worth researching directly rather than waiting for it to appear on a national board.
Biotech and tech corporate video
San Diego's biotech corridor is substantial, and corporate, medical and product video is steady, unglamorous, and better paid than most screen background here.
And the honest structural gap
San Diego has no county film commission and no local rebate, which is unusual for a city this size. Efforts to create both have been discussed. Discussion is not a programme — do not make plans on it.
California's state incentive did expand substantially and explicitly rewards filming outside the traditional studio zone, which should benefit San Diego. Whether it yet has is a separate question, and the board at the top of this page is the honest answer to it.
Representation
San Diego agent, LA agent, or both?
Many actors here seek Los Angeles representation precisely because of the zone problem — an LA agent submits you into the larger market, and a San Diego agent knows the local commercial and corporate work.
Neither choice is wrong. Doing neither is.
01Is the agency SAG-AFTRA franchised? The union franchises agents, not managers. Managers are neither franchised nor, in most cases, regulated by state law.
02Is it licensed under the California Talent Agencies Act? California licenses talent agencies. Ask for the licence — and note there are specific legal protections in this state around advance-fee talent services.
03How does it get paid? Commission on work you book. Never a fee from you up front.

Should I list myself as local to Los Angeles?
Many San Diego actors do, and it opens up a far larger market. It also means absorbing a four-hour round trip per audition and per shoot day, with no travel owed to you. It is a legitimate strategy and a real cost — decide it deliberately rather than by default.
Can I build a career here without moving to LA?
In commercial, corporate, bilingual and theatre work, genuinely yes — and the theatre rates here are the strongest we have measured anywhere. For a screen career specifically, the zone problem is a real structural headwind and pretending otherwise would not help you.
How do I get background work here?
Through the background casting services on the union's own list — and read the four rules above first. Members cannot be charged to register at all; non-members should not be paying more than a small one-time set-up fee.
Does the state incentive help San Diego?
It should — California's programme expanded and explicitly rewards filming outside the traditional studio zone. Whether it has translated into local casting calls yet is a different question, and the honest answer is on the board at the top of this page.
