Two things to check on any Austin offer
Is it a 12-hour day? Several local background rates are quoted for a twelve-hour call, which changes the hourly maths considerably.
Is it local hire? A large share of Austin postings say local hire only, meaning no travel, no lodging, and you are expected to arrive as though you live here.

Who casts film and commercial work in Austin?
Most city guides tell you to check a national platform. Here is the more useful version: two working casting offices operate out of the same building, and one of them runs the background arm as well.

The Sheridan slate is not casting out of Austin
Taylor Sheridan shoots a great deal of Texas television, and almost all of it is North Texas — Fort Worth, plus towns like Ferris and Granbury. That work casts through a DFW office. If you are in Austin hoping to be seen for it, you are in the wrong half of the state.

Austin has the reputation and the smallest city incentive
Texas cities stack their own rebates on top of the state programme, and Austin's is 2.5%. San Antonio and Houston both offer 10%. That is counter-intuitive and it is worth knowing before you assume Austin is where the money goes.
You are in the Houston-Austin union local, not Dallas-Fort Worth
Texas has two SAG-AFTRA locals and the line runs between Austin and DFW. Yours covers "Austin to Corpus to Houston and back" — houston@sagaftra.org. An Austin actor and a Fort Worth actor are in different locals of the same union in the same state.
The cost-of-living question is the real one
Austin was, for years, the answer to "where can I build a career without New York rent." That has changed materially, and it is the question every actor here is actually weighing — against Dallas, San Antonio and Atlanta, all of which are cheaper. Run your own numbers on rent before you move for the reputation, because the reputation is older than the current prices.

SAG-AFTRA franchises agents, not managers. Managers are neither franchised by the union nor, in most cases, regulated by state law. And a real agent earns commission on work you book — never a fee from you up front.
Common questions
Do I have to drive to Dallas or Houston for work?
Not for what casts locally — commercial, industrial and independent film all cast in Austin, and San Antonio is eighty miles if you want to widen the net. Dallas is 195 miles and Houston 165, which are trips rather than commutes.
How far outside Austin do shoots go?
Regularly out to Bastrop, Lockhart and San Marcos. Check whether a posting pays as distant or expects you to arrive as a local hire — most Austin notices specify local hire only.
Do I need an agent to work in Austin?
Not to submit here, and not for a great deal of the non-union commercial and industrial work. Representation widens what you are seen for; it is not the gate.
What kind of work does Austin actually get?
Commercial and industrial make up the reliable volume, with independent film, student productions and a steady voice-over market alongside. Large studio series are the exception rather than the pattern.
