This is the single most consequential fact about working in Georgia, and almost nobody publishes it.

Three and a third times the money — and a whole day of your availability back. A non-union background actor guaranteed $100 who must hold twelve-plus hours open, with no call time until the afternoon before, is selling an entire day for a hundred dollars.
So should you join the union?
That is not the question, and asking it wrong is how people get this decision backwards
Everyone frames it as a rate comparison, and as a rate comparison it is obvious. But joining SAG-AFTRA triggers Global Rule One — once you are in, non-union work is closed to you.
And non-union work is the majority of Atlanta's volume. That is the trade. So the actual question is:
Can I book enough union days to replace the non-union days I will lose?
For someone already turning down non-union work because they are busy, joining is straightforward. For someone booking two non-union background days a month, joining may reduce their income to zero for a while. Neither answer is wrong; they are different situations.

The top of that table is sixty-three times the bottom. Every competitor page opens with the state's headline production and spending figures. Those are the numbers everyone quotes — and none of them tells you that a day of it can pay a hundred dollars.

They are not interchangeable. Some cast background only. Some cast photo doubles, stand-ins and specialty day players — distinct, better-paid categories that beginners rarely know exist. Some cast principals as well. A few operate in more than one state — one runs Knoxville, Atlanta and Charlotte together.
An extras casting company is not a talent agent
This is a general rule for the category, not a remark about anyone named above. An extras casting company should not charge you to be on a roster. If any casting service does, apply the rule that holds everywhere: a legitimate business in this chain earns money from the production, not from you.
A category nobody explains
Your car can book work without you
Atlanta productions regularly cast picture cars — and the calls are specific: your own car, truck or SUV, 2016 or older, with previous on-set driving experience preferred.
The detail that makes it worth knowing: in most cases they will use the owner as background, but that is not required. A production can simply pay to use the vehicle for the day.
Which means an older car is an asset here
Period and contemporary productions both need vehicles that do not look new. If you drive something a decade old, that is not a problem to solve — in this market it is a second line of income, and it is one of the few categories where the barrier to entry is something you already own.
