How this work runs

Read the breakdown before the logline

The logline sells the film; the breakdown tells you whether you are right for it. Age range, the character's function in the story and the number of shoot days are what decide whether the tape is worth your afternoon.

Feature self-tapes are longer

Expect two or three sides rather than one, and expect them to want the arc across the scene rather than a single tone. Give them a full read of each side and resist the urge to compress it into a demo-reel version of the character.

Availability and holds

Features work on holds and avails. Being put on avail is not an offer — it means they want the option on your dates. Ask what the hold covers and whether it is paid, and keep your own calendar honest.

Union status changes the job

A SAG-AFTRA feature comes with scale minimums, meal penalties and turnaround rules. A non-union independent may pay more or less, but the protections are whatever is in the contract you sign. The union status on each notice is what the production told us.

Questions actors ask

Can I audition for a movie without an agent?

Yes. Independent features cast directly far more often than people assume, and every notice on this page accepts direct submissions. Studio features generally go through agents, but the independent world is where most working screen credits start.

How do I audition for movies if I have no credits?

Submit for the roles you are actually right for, tape them properly and do it consistently. Casting directors on independent features watch unrepresented tapes — what gets you cut is the wrong age range or a careless self-tape, not an empty resume.

Are open casting calls for movies ever legitimate?

Many are. The ones that are not share the same tells: a fee to submit, a fee for mandatory classes or photos, no named production company, and no specifics about dates or pay. We publish only what a production will state on the record, and we show you when a detail is missing rather than filling it in.

What does a feature film pay?

It ranges from SAG-AFTRA scale on a signatory production to a flat day rate, deferred payment or copy and credit on a low-budget independent. The compensation on each notice comes from the production, and where they did not state one, we say so.

Do you vet the productions behind these listings?

No. We aggregate public casting listings and we do not vet the people behind them. Read the notice, check the production yourself, and never pay to audition — any listing that asks you for money is either a scam or a business we would not send you to.
