Theatre asks for a different kind of preparation than screen work: a rehearsal period you have to be genuinely available for, material prepared in advance, and a room you walk into rather than a file you upload.

How this work runs

Availability is the first cut

Companies cast against a fixed rehearsal and performance calendar. If you cannot hold the whole block, say so in your submission rather than after an offer.

Prepare what they asked for

If a notice asks for a contemporary monologue under two minutes, or sixteen bars in the style of the show, that instruction is part of the audition. Bring exactly that.

Know the contract type

Union, fringe, profit-share and community productions differ enormously in pay and commitment. The union status on each notice comes from the company.

Questions actors ask

Do I need sheet music for a musical audition?

If there is a live accompanist, yes — bring clean, marked, single-sided copies in a binder. If the notice asks for a self-tape, follow the track instructions it gives instead.

What is an open call?

An open call is an audition anyone eligible can attend without being submitted by an agent. Arrive early; slots are usually first come, first seen.

How long should my monologue be?

Whatever the notice specifies. When it does not say, prepare something contrasting and under two minutes, and be ready to be cut short.
