Student films are a real way to build on-camera experience and a working relationship with directors who will still be directing in ten years. They are also, honestly, unpredictable — schedules shift and budgets are small.

Get the essentials in writing
Shoot dates, call times, location, meals, travel and whether you receive a copy of the finished film. A short email confirming these prevents most of the problems that come up on student sets.
Expect a longer day than scheduled
Student crews are learning. Build buffer around the call time rather than booking something immediately after.
Footage is the payment on most of these
If the film is the compensation, make sure the release you sign lets you use clips for your reel.
Questions actors ask
Are student films paid?
Sometimes. Degree and thesis productions more often pay a small rate or expenses; first-year exercises usually do not. Each notice shows what the production told us.
Should I sign the release they send?
Read it first. Check that it does not sign away your right to use footage of your own performance, and ask for that clause if it is missing.
Do student films belong on my resume?
Early on, yes — list them as film credits with the school name. As you accumulate professional credits, they tend to drop off.
Do you vet the productions behind these listings?
No. We aggregate public casting listings and we do not vet the people behind them. Read the notice, check the production yourself, and never pay to audition — any listing that asks you for money is either a scam or a business we would not send you to.
