What to Wear for a Self-Tape Audition (and What to Avoid)
Your clothing and appearance should always support your performance, not distract from it. Think of your wardrobe as part of the storytelling — an extension of the character.
Whether you're figuring out what to wear to an audition in person or what to wear for a self tape at home, the rules are the same: your clothing should support the performance, not compete with it. Think of your wardrobe as part of the storytelling — an extension of the character.
Wardrobe and background are directly connected — what you wear only works if it doesn't disappear into what's behind you. See Chapter 12: Self-Tape Background for the colors and setups that work best on camera.
What to Avoid
- Busy patterns and stripes — they strobe on camera
- Colors that match your backdrop — you'll disappear
- Jewelry that catches light and creates glare
- Heavy logos or text that pull focus from your face
Makeup: The Natural Look
- Minimal Makeup: Light base to smooth skin tone, a touch of mascara, soft lip color. Avoid heavy eyeliner or stage-style makeup unless the role calls for it.
- For Men (or all genders): The main concern is shine. Powder or blotting paper helps. Style your hair neatly.
Anything that moves, shines, or distracts is a problem. The camera should cut to your eyes, not your earrings.
