A reader gives you something to act against and sets the rhythm you play. The common failures are a reader who performs over you, and a reader who is so flat that you end up acting alone. You want steady, audible, off-camera lines delivered at a level below yours. When there is nobody available, our scene partner reader speaks the other character's lines back to you at your own pace so you can still rehearse and tape properly.
